The strength of scouting in the Catholic Church lies in the fact that the scouting program affords such a suitable environment for youth to worship and grow spiritually. This is especially so with scout retreats where a young person can examine, share and experience God’s word in a positive and nurturing setting. Scouting’s values are similar to our Christian values, and it is through our efforts that we strive to motivate our youth to be better Catholics throughout their lives.
The Diocese of Joliet will hold its annual Scout Day of Reflection Retreat on Jan 27, 2018, at Holy Family Church in Shorewood. The retreat will be held from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and is open to boys and girls alike. This includes Girl Scouts, Cub and Boy Scouts, Venture Scouts, American Heritage Girls, Camp Fire, Junior Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Trail Life USA, and any members of other Catholic youth scouting programs.
The retreat is split into two sessions, one for older scouts (grade 6+) and younger scouts (grades 1-5) held simultaneously. The retreat includes Mass and lunch. The JDCCS offers religious recognitions and activity programs for Catholic Scouts to grow in their Catholic faith and the ideals of scouting. After Easter each year, a Religious Recognitions/Bishops Scouting Mass is held, while the Ros-a-Ree Catholic Scout Retreat/Campout Out Weekend is held in August.
